Bio
Dr. Stephen K. Markham, Ph.D. is the Goodnight Distinguished University Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. His Ph.D. is from Purdue University, his MBA is from the University of California, Irvine, and holds an M.S. and B.S. (Cum Laude) from Brigham Young University. He won the David Ross dissertation award and the PDMA International Dissertation competition.
Dr. Markham is the Executive Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at NC State University. He was a co-founder and Director of the Technology, Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Program (TEC) and past Director of the Center for Innovation Management Studies (CIMS). He served on the Faculty Senate and won the Distinguished Faculty Extension award.
He served as Senior Vice President of Global Strategy and Product Portfolio with P&L responsibilities for the Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions division. He was a founder and member of BP’s Innovation Board. He consults with numerous corporations and government agencies including IBM, P&G, NASA, Mead Westvaco, Cisco, Net App, BioGen, NCR, to name a few.
Dr. Markham has been a founding board member or officer of numerous high-technology start-up companies including: LipoScience, CFO and Founding Board Chair, LipsInc, CFO and founding Board Chair, Kyma Technologies, President, CFO and Founding Board Chair, HueMetrics, CFO and Founding Board Chair and others. He is an active Angel Investor and regularly reviews investment proposals for various private investors.
He is a Certified New Product Development Professional. He was president of the Product Development & Management Association (PDMA) Research Foundation, founder of the PDMA’s New Product Development Professional Certification Program, past PDMA officer and board member. Dr. Markham served on the editorial review board of the Journal of Product Innovation Management and reviews regularly for other journals. Dr. Markham holds multiple patents in biochemistry using NMR to analyze bio samples.
Dr. Markham’s research focuses on the roles and processes in the front-end of technological innovation, concentrating on the role champions take in early commercial development of new technology, product development processes, portfolio and program management, the Front End of Innovation and the Valley of Death. He teaches in executive education and MBA programs in the areas of leadership, corporate culture, innovation and technology commercialization. He has received and participated in numerous contracts and grants.
