Alexa Schleien is the Student Learning and Engagement Coordinator for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Her path to entrepreneurship has been anything but traditional. She began her career in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, teaching high school English as a Second Language. Driven by a passion for academic access for English learners, she later became a curriculum writer for the school district, developing cross-disciplinary materials for more than 30 high schools.
Alexa continued in the language field through teaching roles at UNC Greensboro, UNC Charlotte, and Forsyth Technical Community College, where she mentored future educators and taught immigrant and international students. Although entrepreneurship wasn’t part of her original plan, her passion for language learning and community connection led her to found Vecino Center for Language and Culture in Winston Salem, North Carolina. What began as a $750 personal investment and a few Spanish classes held in local coffee shops has now evolved into a thriving center serving more than 500 adult learners and employing over 25 staff. Vecino offers culturally rich, community-centered language programs that reflect Alexa’s commitment to meaningful entrepreneurial projects.
In her role at NC State, Alexa supports and engages emerging entrepreneurs across disciplines, helping them translate their passions and expertise into innovative ventures that strengthen their communities.
