Student Worker Information: Technical Support role for Albright Entrepreneurship Garage

Summary Job Function:

The Albright Entrepreneurship Garage is an extension of NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship. It exists to allow our students to explore, develop and materialize their entrepreneurial endeavors. 

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about helping students succeed in their entrepreneurial endeavors. They will assist with daily Garage operations, including providing hands-on guidance with equipment and tools, preparing and leading workshops, equipment maintenance, space organization and tidiness, and supporting students in developing their projects. This person should take pride in maintaining a safe, clean, and organized workspace, and be eager to learn more about prototyping, fabrication, and manufacturing technologies. A genuine interest in fostering a welcoming, well-functioning environment for all members is essential.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

   Staff Duties (40%)

  • Clean, maintain, and organize the space and equipment (10%)
  • Assist members with equipment and prototyping needs (10%)
  • Assist staff with events (10%)
  • Assist staff with any available tasks or projects as directed (10%)

   Student Duties (60%)

  • Conduct beginner equipment training and workshops as needed and directed (40%)
  • Be a familiar face around the Garage, constantly engaging our members through our designated channels as well as in person (20%)

Qualifications for the Position: 

  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team 
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills 
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends, as needed
  • General familiarity with prototyping tools and equipment, including 3D printers, laser cutters and hand tools.

Plus Skills:

  • Involvement in entrepreneurship activities/education at NC State
  • Past experience in teaching/instruction in a related discipline. 
  • Proficiency with 2D and 3D software applications supporting rapid prototyping/manufacturing.
  • Experience operating a CNC.

Additional Information: 

  • This Student worker position is a 10-15 hour per week position.
  • This position will receive compensation of $15 per hour. 
  • One year position (fall and spring semester). 
  • Student workers are eligible to re-apply to this position.

Supervisor: Marketing and Communications Coordinator

Department: NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Description

The NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship digital media journalist will collaborate with the marketing and communications coordinator to identify stories that connect, inspire and strengthen the brand of NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The digital media journalist will take direction from the marketing coordinator as well as independently identify opportunities for storytelling to pitch to the marketing coordinator. The writer will use the most appropriate methods of interviewing and gleaning information to create drafts of news blog posts and podcast videos for review and incorporate any feedback to create the final publication. 

Responsibilities

  • Interview relevant faculty/staff, students, alumni and community members for digital media production
  • Glean information from multiple sources independently using search engines, NC State websites and logic to fill in gaps and provide appropriate context in stories.
  • Consider the intended audience and target them based on their drivers with the assistance of the marketing coordinator.
  • Write stories based on interviews and research conducted
  • Aid in podcasting production process including interviewing and editing
  • Assist in identifying relevant stories and developing content for department and program websites by keeping abreast of current topics and goals in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. 
  • Write approximately 2-3 news stories per month, with some exceptions. The time spent per story is variable based on the story requirements and dependence on collaborators. 
  • Take opportunities for professional development to develop new skills in marketing,  communications, writing, innovation and entrepreneurship. These opportunities should be performed while clocked in.
  • Work with other team members at NC State on projects with shared goals.
  • Maintain positive relationships with other media outlets on campus such as The Technician, The Nubian Message, Agromeck, and Roundabout. 

Requirements

  • Familiar with or can easily adapt to AP style.
  • Able to connect facts and knowledge and build messaging around that; ie, brand messaging should be woven into stories.
  • Ability to conduct interviews, use appropriate tech to capture information and transform that into engaging content. Marketing coordinator to support the writer by sharing tools and resources as needed.
  • Interest in innovation and entrepreneurship, or the ability to quickly appreciate the nuances of the field, as well as activities conducted by Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The marketing coordinator and digital media journalist will have weekly meetings via Zoom or in-person to discuss project status, brainstorm content ideas and provide feedback/answer questions. These can also take the form of asynchronous communication using technology or project management tools.
