Portrait of Ben Dictus of Bee Downtown

We’re kicking off Startup Essentials for the spring semester with a very special event featuring Ben Dictus, lead beekeeper for Bee Downtown!

Ben is Bee Downtown’s Lead Beekeeper at Bee Downtown for all of North Carolina. Ben earned a degree in biology from Lawrence University, a Masters degree at Bowling Green State University, and is completing a Ph.D at North Carolina State University in Higher Education Administration.  Ben started beekeeping in 2015, and really learned bees while working for Eurofins Agroscience as a member of the beekeeper team where they performed research on hives with colony counts exceeding 1000. In addition to keeping all of Bee Downtown’s North Carolina hives, he also keeps personal hives.

Bee Downtown, uses cities, and the businesses in them, to collaboratively rebuild healthy honey bee populations. In addition to installing and maintaining beehives for businesses, Bee Downtown has created a turn-key environmental program for businesses that includes, but is not limited to, hands-on beekeeping classes for employees, data collection from the hives to further honey bee research, annual environmental reporting on the hives and the impact they have had in the community, tailored social media campaigns, and specialty bottled honey from the hives each year. The company was founded by Leigh-Kathryn Bonner, an alumna of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

In addition to our fantastic speaker, we will have an exciting announcement concerning the future home of the Entrepreneurship Garage.

About Startup Essentials

Startup Essentials is hosted by the Entrepreneurship Garage (eGarage) every two weeks. The event brings in entrepreneurs from around the community to tell you their story, answer your questions and provide us all with their sage wisdom. These events this season will be opened to the greater NC State student population (meaning membership to the eGarage is NOT required) but eGarage members will have tickets reserved for them.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our eGarage Manager DC at eigaragemanager@ncsu.edu
